One of the easiest ways to encourage someone is to endlessly compare them to someone better. There will always be someone better, so this can go on to infinity and you can berate them when they fail. Better still, when this turns the victim into a results-obsessed basket case, you can pass on the emotional responsibility to them. It's their fault for listening to you, not your influencing.
