Examination apologism doesn't make sense when you think about it for like five seconds. We tell kids that this is how it works in the real world, sifting the chaff from the wheat - but nobody ever admits that it rarely actually does. Comparing people like numbers is unconstructive, unhelpful, and the least adults can do is stop telling kids that it means anything beyond ego stroking.
