As the central character is relatively independent I felt she would drive herself to University in the manner of American kids in the movies (see When Harry Met Sally and Toy Story 3). I also wanted to show the freedom and joy of being on her own and thought of the girl singing along to the Tom Petty song in Silence of the Lambs. The lyrics from American Girl were duly adapted.
