The two chatty students, ignoring events whilst they discuss some abstruse concept, were inspired by two real students I used to encounter at lunchtimes when I worked in a local university. Despite my wish for a peaceful sandwich and some silent drawing, they would start up similar arguments in very loud voices, which I thought would be funny to lampoon when it came to this story.
