Captain Clay is a mixture of Humphrey Bogart and Robert Mitchum (which shows my age if nothing else). There's a touch of Bogart as Charlie Allnut in African Queen (mainly the hat) but overall Clay is probably most like Mitchum who though famous for macho roles, was a reasonably good amateur poet in his spare time and effectively portrayed a bookish teacher in David Lean's Ryan's Daughter.
