When Vespa mandarinia, the LARGEST species of hornets in the world, were found in the USA in 2019, the New York Times dubbed them "Murder Hornets"... and the name stuck. More than two years later and prompted by a Washington state entomologist, the country’s leading entomological society gave the species a “common” name it hopes the general public will use instead: Northern giant hornet."
