If you think Japanese is hard, just wait till you talk to cashiers. Their talking speed is insane, AND THEY'RE DOING IT IN KEIGO. Keigo is honorific speech in case you didn't know...it's like an entirely new language.... The Gaijin Smash rule is: if someone asks you a question and you don't know, just say "HAI." Unfortunately that can lead to more open ended questions, thus backfiring on you xD
