In Korea, one's clan + surname isn't necessarily an accurate way to determine familial relationships, unless you have a jokbo (lineage book), but people still like to ask for a sense of connection. It is true that clans and surnames are inseparable and are passed down for generations, making each family name unique to its geographical origin.
