Some notes on Nautical Terminology: phrases like "hard left," "rudder amidships" are orders given to a helmsman (the person steering the ship). "Hard left" means bring your rudder over to the left 35 degrees (as far as it safely goes). The rudder is what steers the ship by redistributing water pressure over the stern and the propeller(s).
