If I'm not mistaken, women were supposed to keep their hats on when indoors, while men took theirs off. The reasoning for this was that a woman's hat was part of her outfit, while a man's hat was for purely practical purposes. Grace can be forgiven for not knowing the fine points of 1700s etiquette, though.
