The old man Axel is talking about is Owen's grandfather, who was also a hunter (hence why Axel and Lars wanted him dead). Nazka told Yule once that he and Ragnar became friends because both despised violence. Now you can see why Ragnar found Nazka special: everyone else was violent by nature. Also, Axel is referring to Nazka and Todd when he says "those two friends of yours".
