The extra dimension is apparently analogy central. Admittedly, it's a pretty convenient method of getting the necessary information across without having to get too technical about it all. It's much easier to simply think of portals being like the automatic doors at a grocery store rather than trying to wrap your brain around the theory of Einstein-Rosen Bridges.
