I think I read about this custom on the back of one of my day-to-day calendar pages. If memory serves, it is a Portuguese custom not to pay off a debt on New Year’s Day. Many Americans, at any rate, spend a great deal of time in the red, so Megan wasn’t exactly intimidated by the jinx she was putting on herself.
