According to Mario canon, the Goombas lived peacefully with the Mushroom Kingdom before betraying them to fight for the Koopa Troop. But why? Bowser only ever seems to use the Goombas as cannon-fodder. Yet we have to assume the Goombas prefer this to their prior life with the fellow mushroom-like Toads - why else would they join? What life did Bowser promise them that Princess Peach never could?
