Uuuugh this is super late but anyways, this is based on a true story. We have a koi/duck pond at my zoo and one day, in the dead of winter when all other lakes were frozen solid, a great blue heron showed up at our heated Man made pond to pick off some bull head catfish there, then disappeared as soon as the weather warmed a week later. This is my thoughts on how this happened.
