Do you know how salt flats/pans are formed? If a lake begins to dry up, but the water can't drain into the ground, over thousands of years the leftover minerals from the evaporated water will create a massive, flat expanse of minerals (like salt) over the surface where the lake once was. We saw this salt flat in one of the first episodes. 8-)
