The Bureau of Prohibition was part of the Department of the Treasury (more specifically, it was initially part of the IRS, becoming its own bureau within the Treasury Department by 1927.) During Prohibition, it employed a few thousand agents whose job it was to investigate illicit alcohol trafficking and to enforce the 18th Amendment nation-wide. It was also a sort of precursor to the FBI.
