Happy (belated) St Patrick’s Day!
This holiday is always a weird one — in America, people celebrate it by wearing green, drinking beer, and pretending to be Irish. It’s basically an excuse for a themed party, which can be tons of fun!
But why do we celebrate St Patrick’s Day? Well, Saint Patrick was a real dude, supposedly a Catholic guy in Europe. Legend says he is famous for heroically chasing “the snakes” out of Europe — the snakes representing Pagans. This legend depicts witches, as usual, in a negative light.
I tried looking this up and while the anti-witch/anti-Pagan attitude has been a thing in Europe (and early America) for hundreds and hundreds of years, there are some things wrong with this story.
Aside from the “snakes” thing, Saint Patrick was born in Great Britain, not Ireland, and he was never formally dubbed a Saint. (info from History.com)
Details aside, celebrate March 17th however you like. For me, it’s a day of magic, merriment, and mischief!
Take care!
