Even if he got rid of the "infected" arm asap, looks like enough viral nanomachines made it to his tinpet and started doing what they were programmed to do. The dart had nanomachines designed to spread into the SLAF inside the tinpet and interface with the rest of his systems and await the killswitch command to activate.
