In a distant Galaxy, orphaned, 11 year old Isli Lightwood lives in a motel with her caretaker, Esper Mars. When their planet is taken over by an army of invaders called The Penumbra, the two must leave the planet and take refuge in The Sanctum, a place for people who have fallen victim to the oppression of their new rulers. This story, the Story of the Stars, follows the adventures of Isli and Esper as they travel the Galaxy, helping people where they can, and becoming a family of their own.
