So yes, the bird Nana met is a thunderbird, but in her journal she's doubting it because she only ever heard about it in the story her mom told her; she only thought of it as a myth. This is actually going to come more into play later, when Nana will find more things that she can't explain with science, eventually leading to her discovery of how Ketuit ended up like this in the first place.
