A decade ago, the mountain Kingdom of Arkos lost its independence to the Empire of Veturia. After the fall of the kingdom, Ira, the younger prince of Arkos, lives in hiding while the Empire occupies his homeland. When a small Arkosan town is visited by Veturian soldiers, Ira is forced out of the shadows, now armed with powerful new magic from his patron god. Ira also clashes with a Veturian legate, Aviana va Albacorus, with whom he develops a tempestuous connection.
