If you remember the scene where Yule said that to Axel, he wasn't smiling, he was quite angry. But this is how Axel remembers it because his brain tends to twist reality so he can clearly be the victim. Also, he's not "using" Lars, he loves him and he's trying to reassure himself he needs nothing else, because the feelings he has for Ragnar are messing with his head.
