In Earth-year 2440 A.D., a manned antimatter-mining space mission is sucked into a wormhole and ends up in the orbit of a desolate planet where the indigenous species have been terminated by the very machines they built to power their survival. One part of the mining vessel disembarks to scout the planet but is brought down by the guile of the now-dominant machine species. The intelligent probe Juggernaut is launched from the other half of the vessel to protect the stranded personnel.
