Freeman Colby actually wrote his "diary" in its final form many years AFTER the Civil War. That means sometimes as a narrator he can stand back & share some perspective on the wider historical period. As a character in 1862, he doesn't know "how relentless" the war will become -- Nor does he yet know that Retta will become his lifelong companion & mother of his children!
