For generations the church has conscripted an elite order of witch hunters, the Quaesitor Maleficarum, to purge the world of those few born with the curse of the arcane - unnatural powers that go against the will of the divine. Witches born with this curse are forced to go into hiding, flee or face judgement by holy flame. Francine is one such witch, on the run with her young son as they attempt to escape the reach of the church, until a brush with a Conquisitor changes their plans.
