After the war of Exzor, the grand fight between Archangels and Archdemons, both sides suffered heavily losing a good portion of their species resulting in the peace treaty of Belfast's Pass. However the union of Angels and Demons resulted in a more deadly subspecies, Nephalems. Their overwhelming power interested both sides and ended up resulting in a contract to study them but nothing more... that was until a Nephalem escaped from one of the facilities...
