Freshman Jane Smith loves the virtual combat sim, Leapyear, a VR game whose popularity has pushed aside traditional sports like football. Jane's family is supportive but skeptical of the "fake sport." Hopeful that she can convince her parents to let her join the school team, Jane uses years' worth of savings to buy the expensive equipment, which includes her virtual fighting companion, a feisty little monkey.
