According to a primary source, the technique for dirk-throwing used by the Scottish Highlanders in the <1700s was blade-first (ie. holding the dirk by the handle), in contrast to the more modern sport of knife throwing where the technique is to hold the knife handle-first (ie. holding the knife by the blade). Possibly related to the heft of the blade, and the number of full turns before contact.
