Max had always been a loner. Moving from one town to another every year made it hard to keep friends, especially as a kid. When you've been doing it for 19 years, you get used to it. Maybe someday he would meet someone who would give him a reason to stay in one place. Maybe he wouldn't. Max had never really cared about that, not until that stupid class. That's when he met him.
