there's 10 billion joules of energy in an average lightning bolt, and it takes about 100,000 joules to over-toast a slice of toast, so if you divide 10 billion which is 10 to the power of 10 (10,000,000,000) by 10 to the power of 5 (100,000) you end up with ten to the power of 5 (100,000) therefore a single lightning strike can burn 100,000 slices of toast
