That funky little device on his table is a phonograph cylinder, a precursor to the classic disc playing phonographs. Those were around at this time, but wouldn’t come into more prominent use until the 1910s. Another fun fact, apparently celluloid cylinders were among the most durable forms of analog recording, outlasting both vinyl records and cassette tapes in number of playtimes.
