After the overthrow of the Imperial kingdom which dominated Astnên for 1,000 years, the newly-formed republic rises into a significant new era. Sjen gets involved in this period, rising in position to become personally acquainted to the new ruler, Niero. Together with her friends, she learns about life by experiencing many events, goes through many trials, and eventually, has to face death. In a new country that is already going down the slope, it is hard to live according to one's conscience.
