In the floating kingdom of Orvale, every child is born without a soulmark... until the witness a death. The first death they see brands them with a sigil that defines their fate. A soulmarked girl named Seren investigates the rising number of "empty bodies" found across the city, humans whose sigils have been stolen. She soon learns that these sigils aren't symbols of fate but in fact contracts with forgotten gods, and her own mark (the golden spiral was supposed to be erased centuries ago.
