The marsh reed houses are based on ones still used by Marsh Arabs in Iraq today. Apparently there is a lot of debate whether Marsh Arabs are related to Ancient Sumerians, personally the marshiness of the area and the ubiquity of reeds makes me think people were making houses like this for a long time no matter what their origins are.
